Overview§ 01
Built to satisfy homologation requirements for Group 4 racing, the Carrera RS 2.7 stripped weight from the standard 911 and enlarged its air-cooled flat-six to 2.7 litres, fitted with Bosch mechanical fuel injection. Porsche planned to build 500 for homologation; demand carried production past 1,500 cars.
The “Ducktail” rear spoiler — controversial at launch — reduced rear-axle lift enough to be retained on every subsequent 911 generation in some form. Lightweight examples (the Sport/M471 specification) used thin-gauge steel body panels, reduced sound-deadening, and lightweight glass to bring weight to around 960 kg.
